No hens showed up for the show Saturday morning but it didn't keep the boys from practicing their moves. Unfortunately it was a dark, rainy morning so I wasn't able come away with a strong image of their leaps. It was, nevertheless, a moving experience. Out long before sunrise, we watched and listened from our blind. First came the haunting sounds of the males as they approached the lek. All I could see was moving blurs as their songs and laugh-like cackle carried through the shadows. Eventually we enjoyed the colors of the feathers, and saw them do the sparring and dances, maybe just in case some babe was watching from the grass.
